What This Error Means
CE-107861-8 means: “Cannot install the game or app”.
The PS5 starts installing, hits corrupted data or a storage glitch, and kills the install.
Shows up during download, copying from disc, or right after an update tries to apply.
Official Fix
Walk through these in order. This is basically Sony’s playbook, stripped of fluff.
- 1. Hard reboot the console.
- Press the PS button > Power > Turn Off PS5 (not Rest Mode).
- Wait until all lights are off, then unplug the power cord for 60 seconds.
- Plug back in and power on.
- Retry the install.
- 2. Check you have enough free space.
- Go to Settings > Storage.
- For big games, leave at least 20–30 GB extra beyond the game size.
- Delete other games/apps or move PS4 titles to USB extended storage.
- Try the install again.
- 3. Delete the broken install.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Games and Apps.
- Find the game throwing CE-107861-8.
- Select it and hit Delete to wipe the partial install.
- Also open the download queue and cancel any stuck download/patch for that title.
- 4. Update PS5 system software.
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software > Update Using Internet.
- Let it reboot if needed.
- Then try installing the game/app again.
- 5. Reinstall the game/app clean.
- Digital: go to your Game Library, select the game, and hit Download again.
- Disc:
- Eject the disc.
- Wipe it with a clean, soft cloth from center out (no circles).
- Reinsert and let it copy fully.
- Do not run other downloads at the same time if your internet is unstable.
- 6. Rebuild the PS5 database (Sony-approved, but more advanced).
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds) to enter Safe Mode.
- Plug the controller in with USB and press the PS button.
- Select Rebuild Database (usually option 5).
- Let it finish. This can take several minutes.
- Back in normal mode, try installing again.
- 7. Full console reset (last official step).
- Back up saves to PS Plus cloud or USB first.
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Choose Reset Your Console / Initialize PS5.
- After the reset, set it up fresh and try installing the same game.
If CE-107861-8 still shows on multiple games after a full reset, Sony’s answer is: contact PlayStation Support. At that point they suspect SSD or board issues.
The Technician’s Trick
When the above script doesn’t cut it, this is what people who fix these all day actually try.
- 1. Kill corrupt cache first, then reinstall.
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Enter Safe Mode (hold power until the second beep).
- Pick Clear Cache and Rebuild Database (or just Clear Cache + Rebuild if they are split on your firmware).
- Let it finish, then boot normally.
- Now delete the problem game one more time from Storage > Games and Apps and reinstall.
- 2. For disc games: install offline, patch later.
- Delete the broken install.
- Unplug the network cable or disable Wi‑Fi.
- Insert the disc and let the base game install fully with no internet.
- Once it boots and runs, reconnect to the internet and let it pull the latest update.
- This dodges a lot of “half-patched” corrupt installs that trigger CE-107861-8.
- 3. For digital games: change the download path.
- Pause or cancel every other download and upload.
- If you’re using a sketchy Wi‑Fi, temporarily tether the PS5 to your phone hotspot or a different router.
- Re-download the game over that different connection.
- Corrupt chunks from a bad router/ISP cache are a lot more common than Sony admits.
- 4. Try a different user profile.
- Create a new local user on the PS5.
- Log that user in with the same PSN account that owns the game.
- Install the game from that user’s Library.
- Glitched user data has been enough to break installs on some consoles.
Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)
- ✅ Fix: Error only hits one or two games, especially big new titles; rebuild/reset fixes it or it’s clearly a bad disc or bad download.
- ⚠️ Debatable: CE-107861-8 shows up on several games, rebuild/database reset only helps for a short while, and the console is out of warranty but still playable for older installs.
- ❌ Replace: Installs fail on almost everything even after a full initialize, other errors start popping up, and Sony quotes a repair close to the cost of a refurbished or new PS5.
