What This Error Means
F40 means the headphones have hit a firmware / communication fault — the internal software or link with the Bose app has glitched.
In plain terms: the headphones power up, but the software crashes or can’t talk cleanly to your phone, so the app throws F40 and the controls or sound act weird.
Bose doesn’t spell F40 out in the user manual, but when it shows up you usually see some combo of:
- Headphones visible in the Bose app, but stuck, failing setup, or refusing to finish an update.

- ✅ Fix: Still under warranty or only a few years old, F40 showed up during an update, and a reset/firmware reload brings it back to normal.
- ⚠️ Debatable: Out of warranty, 3–5 years old, F40 comes and goes, works after resets but keeps returning — cost of repair vs. discounted replacement is close.
- ❌ Replace: 5+ years old, F40 is permanent, no sound or won’t power reliably, and any quote you get is more than about half the price of a new QuietComfort or similar headphones.
