What This Error Means
‘F21’ on a Garmin Forerunner is not a documented Garmin error code, but when it pops up or freezes on-screen it basically means: the watch failed to boot its firmware.
In plain English: the watch powers, but the operating system crashes before it can get to the normal watch face, so you get stuck on F21, a blank screen, or a short boot loop.
Official Fix
Garmin lumps this under the usual “device frozen / won’t turn on right” problem. Their playbook is simple: reset, charge, update, then support.
- 1. Force a soft reset
- Hold the Power/Light button (top-left on most Forerunners) for 15–30 seconds.
- Wait for the screen to go fully black.
- Release, wait 10 seconds, then tap Power/Light once to try a normal start.
- 2. Give it a real charge
- Clip the watch into its charging cradle firmly. Make sure the pins are clean and lined up.
- Plug into a wall USB charger, not a weak laptop port.
- Leave it on charge for at least 30 minutes, even if the screen looks dead or stuck.
- After that, try powering it on again. Low or unstable voltage can throw bogus error screens.
- 3. Check if a computer still sees it
- Install or update Garmin Express on a computer.
- Connect the watch with a known-good cable and a different USB port if needed.
- If Garmin Express or the file explorer sees the watch, that’s good news: the main board is probably alive, the software is just messed up.
- 4. Reinstall / update the firmware with Garmin Express
- In Garmin Express, add the device if it doesn’t show automatically.
- Run any offered software update. If it lets you, force a reinstall of the current firmware.
- Do not unplug or close the lid while it’s updating, even if it sits on one step for a while.
- When it finishes, eject the device safely, unplug, and reboot the watch.
- 5. Do a full factory reset (only if it boots again)
- Once you can reach the menus, go to Settings → System → Reset (wording varies by model).
- Choose the full reset that wipes user data, not just settings.
- This clears corrupt activity data or settings that can re-trigger boot issues.
- Heads up: anything not synced to Garmin Connect will be lost. That’s normal and expected here.
- 6. When Garmin wants you to call support
- If the watch still shows F21, still boot-loops, or never powers up after all of this, you’re at the end of the official road.
- Garmin’s next step is: contact Garmin Support, run through their basic script, and get a repair or replacement quote.
- If it’s in warranty, they usually swap or repair. If it’s out of warranty, they offer a flat-fee repair or discount on a new unit.
Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)
- ✅ Fix: Under warranty, or a relatively new Forerunner that still talks to Garmin Express and only recently started showing F21 after an update.
- ⚠️ Debatable: Older, budget Forerunner that needs paid service but still powers and is detected by a PC; weigh the repair quote against a newer model’s price and features.
- ❌ Replace: No power, never shows up on any computer or cable, or Garmin’s out-of-warranty repair quote is close to the cost of a modern Forerunner.
