What This Error Means
F44 on a Garmin Forerunner is a firmware crash / system fault code.
The watch software has blown up during start-up or while logging an activity, so the watch freezes, reboots, or just sits on the F44 screen instead of acting like a normal watch.
Official Fix
Garmin’s official stance: treat F44 like a bad software crash. Reset it, fully charge it, then let Garmin Express reload clean firmware. Here’s the straight sequence.
- 1. Force a soft reset.
Most Forerunners: hold the light/power button for 15–20 seconds until the screen goes blank, then hold it again for a second to power back on. This won’t wipe your data; it just kills the frozen software. - 2. Give it a proper charge.
Drop it on the charger for at least 30 minutes. Low voltage can trigger weird firmware faults. Make sure the contacts are clean and the watch actually shows a charging icon. - 3. Connect to a computer with Garmin Express.
Install Garmin Express on a PC or Mac if you don’t already have it. Plug the watch into USB, let Express detect it, and run a sync. If Express offers a software or firmware update, take it. That update is Garmin’s “real” fix for most F44 crashes. - 4. Run a factory reset from the menus (if it will boot).
If you can reach the menus: go to Settings > System > Reset (wording varies by model), choose the option that clears user data/settings. This wipes corrupt profiles and activities that can keep triggering F44. You’ll lose unsynced workouts, so sync first if the watch will talk to your phone or PC. - 5. Still stuck on F44? Official next step is service.
If it still throws F44 after a reset and fresh firmware, Garmin treats it as a hardware-level fault. At that point their playbook is warranty repair or a paid exchange unit.
The Technician’s Trick
When F44 keeps coming back but the watch still shows up on a computer, here’s what the bench techs actually do.
- 1. Mount it as a drive and kill bad activity files.
Plug the watch into a computer with the USB cable/cradle and give it 30 seconds. If it shows up as a drive named “GARMIN”, open it. Go toGARMIN/ACTIVITYand move the newest.FITfiles to your computer or delete them. Also emptyGARMIN/NEWFILESif it exists. A single corrupted workout file can trip F44 over and over. - 2. Force a clean firmware write with Express.
With the watch still plugged in, open Garmin Express. Remove the device from Express, then add it again so Express treats it like new hardware. Let it reinstall the device software and sync completely. This overwrites any half-baked update that might be behind the F44. - 3. Boot, then do the harsh reset.
After Express finishes, safely eject the watch from the computer, unplug it, and power-cycle it again (long press on the power/light button). As soon as it boots normally, run a full reset from the settings menu. Yes, you’ll re-enter profiles and pair sensors again, but it usually stops the F44 loop for good. - 4. Watch for repeat crashes.
If F44 comes back immediately after a bump, swim, or heavy rain, techs start suspecting board corrosion or a failing battery. Software tricks won’t hold for long in that case; you’re into repair-or-replace territory.
Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)
- ✅ Fix: The watch is under 4–5 years old, battery still lasts more than a couple of days, and this is the first time you’ve seen F44. Do the resets and firmware reload; cost is basically your time.
- ⚠️ Debatable: The watch is 5–7 years old, battery life is already weak, screen is beat up, or F44 shows up every few weeks even after resets. Only worth chasing if you really like this exact model or you can’t afford a replacement right now.
- ❌ Replace: The watch is older than 7 years, won’t hold a charge, has water damage or cracked glass, or still shows F44 after a full firmware reinstall and factory reset. Put the repair money toward a newer Forerunner or similar GPS watch.
