Maytag Dishwasher F22 Error Code Fix

What This Error Means

F22 on a Maytag dishwasher is a user interface / control panel communication error.

Translation: the main control board can’t reliably talk to the buttons on the door, so it shuts the cycle down.

Official Fix

This is what Maytag wants you to do, more or less:

  • Kill power to the dishwasher at the breaker for at least 60 seconds, then turn it back on and try a cycle. Sometimes the control just needs a hard reset.
  • If the code comes back, shut power off again and pull the dishwasher door apart (inner panel off) to access the control board and user interface (UI) harness.
  • Check the ribbon cable / harness that runs from the UI (button panel) down to the main control board. Make sure it’s fully seated on both ends, not half-slipped out.
  • Inspect the connectors for corrosion, burnt spots, or obvious damage. Clean light oxidation with contact cleaner and a soft brush; replace any melted connector or wire.
  • Reassemble, restore power, and test. If F22 is gone, you had a loose or dirty connection.
  • If the error returns, replace the user interface / control panel assembly first. That’s the part most manuals point to for this fault.
  • If a new UI doesn’t solve it, replace the main electronic control board. At that point, if the code is still there, the machine is basically not worth chasing.

If you’re not comfortable working around wiring and sharp metal panels, stop after the breaker reset and call a pro.

Bottom line: the official path is reset, check wiring, then throw parts (UI, then main board) at it.

The Technician's Trick

Here’s the off-the-books move we use when F22 shows up after a steamy cycle or a small leak.

  • Kill power at the breaker. Don’t just open the door; kill power.
  • Open the door and look along the top edge of the console. If you see condensation, moisture marks, or soap streaks around the buttons, the UI is probably wet and freaking out.
  • Pull the inner door panel if you’re comfortable with a screwdriver. Otherwise, leave the door open and aim a hair dryer on low heat at the top of the console for 10–15 minutes. Keep it moving; don’t cook the plastic.
  • Let everything cool for another 10 minutes so you’re not powering up hot electronics.
  • Restore power and try a rinse cycle. If the F22 is gone, moisture was shorting the UI.

This is a band-aid, not a cure. If F22 keeps coming back, stop drying it and replace the UI before it dies mid-cycle for good.

Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)

  • ✅ Fix: Dishwasher under ~8–10 years old, cabinets are solid, and F22 goes away with a reset, wire reseat, or a single new UI panel (typically cheaper than a new machine).
  • ⚠️ Debatable: Unit is 8–12 years old, needs both UI and main board, or you’re paying full shop labor on top of parts — price it out against a mid-range new dishwasher first.
  • ❌ Replace: Tub is rusting, racks are falling apart, it has a history of leaks, or the quoted parts + labor are over half the cost of a decent new Maytag or Whirlpool dishwasher.
