What This Error Means
F3 on a Roomba with a Clean Base means bag not detected in the Automatic Dirt Disposal.
Translation: the base refuses to suck the dirt out because it thinks there is no proper bag installed, or the bag sensor is jammed or dirty.
Official Fix
The manual fix is simple: power off, swap the bag, reseat it correctly.
- Unplug the Clean Base from the wall. Kill power first.
- Flip open the lid on the Clean Base.
- Grab the cardboard collar of the bag and pull it straight up to remove.
- If the bag is full, torn, or packed solid with dust, toss it. Do not try to reuse.
- Look down into the bag slot. Make sure there is no old cardboard collar, plastic tab, or packing material stuck on the rail.
- Install a new genuine iRobot bag. Slide the cardboard tab all the way onto the plastic rail until it stops and sits flat.
- Push the bag down loosely into the cavity so the lid can close without hitting it.
- Close the lid firmly until it is fully shut. No gaps, no spring-back.
- Plug the Clean Base back in.
- Dock the Roomba and hit Empty / Empty Bin in the app (or on the robot if your model has that button) to force an empty cycle.
- If F3 still shows, unplug the base again, wait 60 seconds, plug it back in, and try a second brand new bag.
- Still getting F3 after fresh bags and power cycling? Official line: the bag sensor or base electronics are likely faulty. Contact iRobot support for service or a replacement base.
The Technician’s Trick
When F3 keeps coming back even with new bags, the problem is usually the bag sensor, not the bag.
- Unplug the Clean Base again. No power while you poke around.
- Open the lid and pull the bag out.
- Shine a flashlight into the back or side of the bag slot. Look for a small plastic lever or tab that moves when a bag is installed. That is the bag detection switch.
- Gently move that lever with a finger. It should move freely and spring back. If it feels gritty, sticky, or barely moves, that is your F3.
- Hit the area with compressed air to blow out fine dust around the lever and into the cavity. If you do not have air, use a vacuum hose with a narrow nozzle and suck the dust out.
- Use a dry cotton swab to wipe any caked dust off the lever and around the tiny switch behind it. No water, no cleaners.
- Check the plastic rail the bag slides onto on the lid. Make sure it is not cracked, bowed, or half loose. If it popped out, snap it firmly back into place.
- Take a new bag and very slightly bow the cardboard collar outward with your fingers. The idea is to make it press that lever more positively when installed.
- Reinstall the bag fully onto the rail until it stops, push the bag down, then close the lid. Lid should close smoothly and latch without you forcing it.
- Plug the base back in and run an Empty cycle. If the lever moves cleanly and the bag is seated right, F3 usually disappears.
- Last-ditch hack some people use: they shim the lever with a thin piece of cardboard so the switch always reads bag present, especially with tight off-brand bags. That can let the base run with an overfull or missing bag and make a mess, so that one is strictly at your own risk.
Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)
- ✅ Fix: F3 started right after a bag change, the Clean Base is under about 5 years old, and it works fine once you reseat or replace the bag.
- ⚠️ Debatable: F3 comes and goes, you have to smack or flex the lid to clear it, or the base is out of warranty and a sensor repair means opening the unit.
- ❌ Replace: The base will not power reliably, F3 stays even after sensor cleaning and multiple new bags, or a replacement Clean Base costs less than what a shop wants to troubleshoot and repair it.
