What This Error Means
CE-20005-1 means the PS5 cannot install the game or app.
The console starts copying data from disc or storage, hits corrupted or unreadable data, and kills the install.
Official Fix
Run the official checklist first:
- Check storage space. Settings > Storage. Make sure the target drive (Console Storage or M.2 / USB) has several GB free.
- Clean and inspect the disc (if it’s a disc game). Wipe from center out with a soft cloth. If you see deep scratches or cracks, that disc is suspect.
- Delete the broken install. Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. Delete the title that keeps throwing CE-20005-1 so you start fresh.
- Reboot the PS5. Hold the PS button > Turn Off PS5 (not Rest Mode). Wait 30 seconds, then power back on.
- Update the system software. Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.
- Reinstall the game or app. For disc: insert the disc and let it install to Console Storage. For digital: re-download from your Game Library.
- Avoid mixing drives during install. If the game is set to install to an external USB or M.2 expansion, temporarily change the install location to Console Storage and try again.
If CE-20005-1 still shows up after doing all that, Sony’s own playbook usually ends with ‘back up and initialize the PS5’ or ‘contact support’. Before you nuke the system or pay for a repair, use the tricks below.
The Technician’s Trick
Here is how a working tech squeezes answers out of this error without wasting the whole day.
- 1. Hard power cycle and cache clear.
- Turn the PS5 off completely. Do not use Rest Mode.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power on. Test the install again.
- 2. Safe Mode > Clear cache + Rebuild Database.
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Hold the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. That boots Safe Mode.
- Connect a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select ‘Clear Cache and Rebuild Database’ (on some firmware it is split into ‘Clear System Software Cache’ and ‘Rebuild Database’ – run both).
- When it finishes, boot normally and reinstall the game.
- 3. Rule out bad external storage.
- If you use a USB external drive, disconnect it completely and restart the console.
- Try installing the problem game only to Console Storage.
- If it works internally but fails when you move it to USB, that external drive is dying or too slow for PS5 use.
- 4. Rule out a flaky M.2 SSD.
- Settings > Storage. If you see an M.2 drive, set ‘Install Location’ temporarily to Console Storage only.
- Delete the game, reinstall it to Console Storage, and test it there.
- If installs to Console Storage are stable but installs to M.2 throw CE-20005-1, the expansion SSD (or its heatsink/fit) is the problem.
- 5. Disc-only trick: install offline first.
- If the game is on disc, disconnect the internet (unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi‑Fi in Settings).
- Delete the failed install, reboot, then install the base game from disc with the console offline.
- Once it is fully installed and launches, reconnect the internet and grab the latest update.
- 6. When to call Sony.
- If multiple different games fail to install to Console Storage after a database rebuild, the internal SSD or system board may be failing.
- Do not open the console. That voids warranty.
- If under warranty, contact Sony and give them the CE-20005-1 code and the steps you already tried.
Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)
- ✅ Fix: Error only happens with one or two titles, or it disappears after a reinstall/rebuild; console is under warranty or only needs a new USB/M.2 drive or replacement disc.
- ⚠️ Debatable: Out-of-warranty PS5, error appears on several games but only when using an old or cheap external drive; weigh the cost of a quality SSD or Sony repair against how much you actually play.
- ❌ Replace: CE-20005-1 shows up on almost every install straight to Console Storage, even after Safe Mode rebuild and with no extras connected, and Sony quotes a repair close to the price of a used or refurbished PS5.
