Sony PlayStation 5 NW-31247-2 Fix

What This Error Means

NW-31247-2 means your PS5 cannot use the DNS server it is trying to reach.

Translation: the console is on your network, but it cannot look up PlayStation Network or game servers, so online stuff times out, fails to sign in, or refuses to start.

Official Fix

Do it Sony’s way first. Work through these in order:

  • 1. Full power reset of everything
    • Turn off the PS5 completely (not Rest Mode).
    • Unplug power from your modem and router for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the modem back in, wait until all lights are stable.
    • Then plug the router back in, wait until Wi‑Fi is up.
    • Turn the PS5 on and run: Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
  • 2. Check if the internet or PSN is actually down
    • On a phone or PC using the same internet, see if websites load.
    • If nothing loads, the problem is your ISP, not the PS5. Call them.
    • If the web works but you still cannot sign in to PSN on any device, wait it out; PSN may be having issues.
  • 3. Put PS5 network settings back to automatic
    • On PS5 go to: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
    • Highlight your Wi‑Fi or LAN, press Options, choose ‘Advanced Settings’.
    • Set IP Address Settings to ‘Automatic’.
    • Set DNS Settings to ‘Automatic’.
    • Set Proxy Server to ‘Do Not Use’.
    • Save and run Test Internet Connection again.
  • 4. Try wired instead of Wi‑Fi
    • Run an Ethernet cable directly from the router to the PS5.
    • Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN.
    • Use Easy setup (everything automatic).
    • Test Internet Connection. If wired works and Wi‑Fi does not, your wireless is the weak link.
  • 5. Reset DNS at the router
    • On a phone or PC, log into the router admin page (check the sticker: often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
    • Go to Internet or WAN settings.
    • Set DNS to ‘Automatic’, ‘Dynamic’, or ‘Get from ISP’ (wording varies).
    • Apply, let the router reboot.
    • After it is back up, test the PS5 connection again.
  • 6. If the error still will not die
    • Call your ISP and say: ‘DNS keeps failing on my console; can you see any DNS blocks or issues on my line?’
    • If they clear their side and the router looks fine, contact Sony support and quote code NW-31247-2.

The Technician’s Trick

When the official steps do nothing, this is what techs actually do: bypass bad DNS and tune the PS5 connection by hand.

  • 1. Hard-set a reliable DNS on the PS5
    • On PS5 go to: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
    • Highlight your active connection (Wi‑Fi or LAN), press Options > Advanced Settings.
    • Set DNS Settings to ‘Manual’.
    • For Primary DNS enter 8.8.8.8 (Google).
    • For Secondary DNS enter 8.8.4.4 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare).
    • Leave IP Address as Automatic. Leave Proxy as Do Not Use.
    • Save and run Test Internet Connection. If DNS was the issue, NW-31247-2 usually disappears right here.
  • 2. Drop MTU a bit to stop timeouts
    • In the same Advanced Settings screen, set MTU Settings to ‘Manual’.
    • Try MTU value 1473 and test.
    • If it still fails, try 1450 and test again.
    • Certain ISPs and routers choke at 1500; shaving MTU often clears weird network errors like this.
  • 3. Clean up the Wi‑Fi environment
    • Log into your router and, if it is dual-band, prefer 5 GHz for the PS5.
    • Temporarily turn off 2.4 GHz or give 5 GHz its own SSID and connect the PS5 only to that.
    • Change the 5 GHz channel away from defaults (try 40, 44, or 149 if available).
    • Reconnect and test. If it still acts up on Wi‑Fi but is solid on wired, stay wired for gaming.
  • 4. Prove where the fault is using a hotspot
    • Turn on hotspot on your phone (watch your data plan).
    • Connect the PS5 to the phone’s hotspot and test the internet.
    • If it works fine on hotspot, the console is fine; the issue is your router or ISP DNS.
    • If it fails even on hotspot, then you may be looking at a console-side network or software problem and should talk to Sony.

Is It Worth Fixing? (The Financial Verdict)

  • ✅ Fix: When everything else on the PS5 works, the error only shows online, and you can use wired or a better router. This is almost always a network/setup issue, not a dead console.
  • ⚠️ Debatable: When the console is out of warranty, Wi‑Fi only works right next to the router, and you are looking at paid board-level repair instead of just running a cable or upgrading your network gear.
  • ❌ Replace: When NW-31247-2 comes with crashes, overheating, storage or HDMI problems, and the repair quote is close to half the price of a solid used or refurbished PS5.
